How to Transform Winter Curiosity into Global Discovery
Winter in Michigan is the perfect season to explore new interests. At Insight School of Michigan (ISMI), we know that you are young adults preparing for a diverse world. Our virtual learning model gives you the flexibility to learn at your own pace while turning your home into a center for exploration.
The following activities are additional to the teachings at ISMI. We aim to encourage growth and new perspectives that build on your daily curriculum. These ideas help you build research skills and cultural awareness while still focusing on your schoolwork.
Core Discovery 1: The Global Climate and Lifestyle Study
Geography is the study of our beautiful world. It reveals how the earth shapes our lives and how we, in turn, shape the earth. This winter, pick a climate completely different from Michigan, such as a tropical rainforest or an arid desert.
Find out how that weather changes daily life. You can explore how homes are built to manage heat instead of snow. Look at how fashion choices rely on different textiles or how transportation changes based on the landscape. You might even find that the art and colors of a region are inspired by the natural light and local plants. Thinking about these connections helps you practice the critical thinking skills used in your social studies and science courses.
Core Discovery 2: The Culinary Cultural Exchange
Food is a direct way to experience a different culture. Choose a region of the world you are curious about and try to prepare a traditional dish or snack from scratch.
This is a hands-on way to explore history and regional traditions. You can learn about where certain ingredients come from and why they became staples in that part of the world. Trying global flavors in your own kitchen is a fun way to take a break while learning the history behind what people eat.
Extra Ways to Build a Global View
If you are looking for more ways to be well-rounded this semester, try adding these habits to your daily routine:
- Update your study playlist: Listen to music from around the world or in different languages while you work on your assignments to get a feel for different rhythms and sounds.
- Explore digital media: Try a new podcast or video series that focuses on international travel, global history, or social issues.
- Read and subscribe: Find blogs or newsletters that cover international news to see how stories are told from different perspectives.
- Keep a discovery journal: Write down fun facts, new words, or interesting things you learn about different cultures to track your growth over the winter.
- Join the ISMI community: Attend a virtual club meeting, such as the ISMI Multicultural Club or the Book Club, to discuss global ideas with your peers.
- Contribute through virtual volunteering: You can find ways to support causes from your computer, such as helping with digital projects for conservation efforts or community causes. This is a great way to gain professional experience and see the impact of your work on a global scale.
A Note on Digital Safety and Critical Thinking
When you explore the world online or look for volunteer opportunities, it is important to lead with a “safety first” mindset. Always use your critical thinking skills to evaluate websites and organizations. Before you sign up for a project or share any info, talk to a parent or a trusted adult to make sure the opportunity is safe and legitimate. Navigating the internet responsibly is a big part of your career growth.
Your Journey Continues
These activities celebrate your maturity and curiosity. By taking charge of your space, you are building a sophisticated view of the world. We encourage you to reach out to your ISMI teachers or counselors if you are looking for additional resources or specific opportunities to learn more about a topic that sparks your interest.
Which global habit will you start this week? Whether it’s a new playlist or a local recipe, your discovery starts at home.
