Tips & Tricks for a Successful Job Interview

October is the season of tricks and treats—but when it comes to your future, you’ll want to keep the tricks in your back pocket for your next job interview. Whether you’re applying for your very first part-time job, an internship, or preparing for a career path after high school, knowing how to ace an interview is a skill that can open doors.
At Insight School of Michigan (ISMI), we know many of our students are already thinking ahead about work, college, or both. That’s why career readiness is such an important part of what we do. Today, we’re sharing a few interview “tricks” that can turn any spooky nerves into a real confidence boost.
Tip #1: Dress the Part
No costumes required here—but how you present yourself matters. Choose an outfit that’s neat, clean, and workplace ready. Even for virtual interviews, looking professional shows, you’re taking the opportunity seriously.
Pro tip: Avoid loud graphics or pajamas (save those for Halloween).
Tip #2: Practice Your “Treats” (a.k.a. Strengths)
Before the interview, make a list of your top three strengths or achievements. Maybe you’re great at teamwork, super reliable, or a fast learner. Practice saying them out loud so you’ll be ready when an interviewer asks, “Why should we hire you?”
Pro tip: Don’t be shy about giving yourself credit—this is your time to shine.
Tip #3: Tame the Monster—Your Nerves
It’s normal to feel nervous, but you can turn nerves into energy. Take a deep breath, sit up straight, and smile. Remember: the interviewer wants you to do well.
Pro tip: Practice with a friend, teacher, or even in front of a mirror.
Tip #4: Bring Questions of Your Own
Here’s the sweetest treat of all—interviews aren’t just for them to get to know you. They’re also your chance to learn about the job. Ask simple questions like:
- “What does a typical day look like here?”
- “What skills are most important for this job?”
Showing curiosity makes you look engaged and confident.
Tip #5: Follow Up
Don’t ghost your interviewer! Send a quick thank-you email after your interview to show appreciation. A little gratitude can go a long way in making you stand out.
