Overcoming the Odds: A Student’s Journey of Resilience and Strength

At 22 years old, Asja is on the cusp of a significant milestone—earning her high school diploma from Insight School of Michigan (ISMI). Her journey has been anything but conventional, shaped by perseverance, motherhood, and an unyielding determination to build a better future for herself and her children.
Balancing Motherhood and Education
For Asja, being a mother while pursuing her education has been both a challenge and a motivation. Along with the responsibilities that come with raising young children, she’s in the final stretch finishing her last two credits with graduation on the horizon. Asja acknowledges the difficulties of balancing schoolwork, household duties and childcare. At times, when her daughter was teething, sleepless nights made it hard to keep up with her coursework. Still, she powered through.

Finding Support at Insight School of Michigan
She says what sets ISMI apart from her previous schools is the level of support she has received. Having attended multiple schools before enrolling at ISMI this past September, Asja experienced a mix of challenges, including unsupportive environments and being judged for her circumstances. At ISMI, things were different for Asja.
Her school counselor, Ms. James, has been instrumental in guiding her towards graduation and even helping her explore future college opportunities. Once she graduates high school, Asja plans to pursue a career as a registered nurse. Ms. James is helping her search for local colleges and financial aid options, recognizing the importance of flexibility for a stay-at-home mom without reliable transportation.
The Road to Graduation
Attending online school has been a game-changer for Asja. Unlike her past experiences, where schools were indifferent to her struggles, ISMI provided her with understanding teachers and counselors who accommodated her needs as a young mother. They offer support, provide flexibility when life gets in the way, and recognize the hard work she puts into both her education and parenting. Their encouragement has been invaluable, making her feel seen and appreciated.
A Future in Nursing
With her graduation date set for June 13 in Lansing, Asja is looking ahead to her next chapter—pursuing a nursing career, possibly in labor and delivery. She understands the fears and uncertainties expectant mothers face and hopes to use her experiences to provide comfort and reassurance to others.
Despite the challenges of being a single mother, Asja remains steadfast in her belief that she is creating a better life for her children. Her ultimate goal is to ensure that they have a childhood filled with stability and encouragement.
Inspiring Other Young Mothers
Asja’s story is one of resilience and determination. She hopes that by sharing her journey, she can inspire other young mothers who might feel lost or hopeless. “If I can do it, I know any other mom can do it,” she says. Her advice to others in similar situations is simple but powerful: focus on your child’s well-being, and never give up on your dreams. With the right support, the right mindset, and the drive to succeed, anyone can achieve their goals.
