How to Switch from Homeschool to Online School in Michigan

For teens and young adults switching from homeschool, Insight School of Michigan (ISMI) offers a tuition-free online public high school built for students ages 16–22 in grades 9 through 12. When can a family switch from homeschool to online school?

Because enrollment is available year-round in most cases, families do not need to wait for a specific date to get started. If you want to align your student’s start date with the school calendar, Insight School of Michigan’s academic calendar lists first-day and semester-start dates for the current year.

What records should families gather before applying?

Having these documents ready before starting an application can help the process move more quickly:

Student’s birth certificate
Proof of Michigan residency (such as a utility bill or lease)
Immunization records or an exemption form
Any available homeschool portfolio, transcripts, or records of coursework completed
Prior school records, if the student attended a school before homeschooling

Students must also be able to show completion of eighth grade through an official transcript or homeschool portfolio.

What if we don’t have formal records or transcripts?

Many homeschool families do not have formal transcripts, and enrollment is still very much possible. In many cases, homeschool portfolios or coursework records can be submitted in place of a traditional transcript, and students may be able to apply public school credits or credits earned through homeschool work toward ISMI’s graduation requirements.

Students who enroll with a transcript or homeschool portfolio will speak with an ISMI placement coordinator, who evaluates satisfactory completion of the documented work against ISMI’s standards to determine the right grade and credit level.

How does the enrollment process work?

Enrollment happens through the K12 Enrollment Portal:

Create an enrollment account. This gives access to the online application and real-time updates on application status.
Submit an application. Add the student’s information and select Insight School of Michigan.
Upload required documents. This includes the birth certificate, proof of residency, immunization records, and any available homeschool or prior school records.
Receive next steps. After the application is reviewed, families receive information on enrollment status and, once approved, access to onboarding resources to help prepare for the first day.

Is there an age or eligibility requirement?

Insight School of Michigan serves students in grades 9–12 for students ages 16–22.
To attend ISMI, students entering high school may not be older than 21 by September 1 of the enrolling year.
Students who turn 22 while enrolled and need additional education in order to receive a diploma may remain enrolled until they meet the graduation requirements or the end of the school year, whichever occurs first.
While attending ISMI you must maintain full-time, Michigan residency.

Do we need to notify anyone when we stop homeschooling?

No. In most cases, Michigan homeschool families are not registered with the state, so enrolling your student is the transition to online public school.

If you registered your homeschool as a nonpublic (private) school or receive special education services through your local district, simply let us know during enrollment. We’ll help make sure your student’s transition is seamless.
